You can use Appalachian to manage logging in. To log in, click on the Appalachian icon in your status bar, which should do 'the right thing' depending on your use and preferences.

Detecting Login

Part of the OpenID 1.x specification suggested pages call their OpenID login boxes a certain name, which Applachian will look for first. This isn't an easy suggestion to comply with, so if the field isn't found, Appalachian will ask you to click on the correct box before clicking on the Appalachian icon.

Appalachian will submit the form for you and remember your usage for future login.

First-Time Use

The first time you use any OpenID on a page, Appalachian will use your default ID. If you don't want to use the default, right click on the Appalachian icon instead to bring up a list of your OpenIDs, and select the one you do want to use. If you don't want a default at all, check the appropriate box under preferences. In this mode, clicking on the Appalachian icon will always bring up a list of your OpenIDs.

The following illustrates the key actions for login:

Make sure to select the OpenID entry field if Appalachian reports it can't locate the correct one on its own.

Drawing on Past Use

After you've logged in once with an Appalachian managed OpenID, any time you return to that specific page, clicking on the Appalachian icon, whose appearance will change to reflect login availability, will use the OpenID you selected (instead of the default). It will also remember which field in which form to use.

If you use more than one OpenID in a site, clicking on the icon will bring up a list of those OpenIDs you've used for you to choose from.
