Showstoppers
Major Bugs
- Any LaTeX code in the titles shown in the timeline view does not get processed; it still shows things like \$300 and $\hbar$.
- Exhibits that are created by authorized users then deleted while signed out stay in the list of available Exhibits but generate an error if selected (since they're actually deleted).
- Facets and modifications made re:sorting and grouping options are lost during 'Preview' and 'Download' functions. (Firefox v2.0.0.17; Mac OSX v10.4.11;behavior seen with new and saved Exhibits; other changes (e.g. Title, Theme) saved correctly).
- Citeline sometimes crashes when hitting errors in parsing BibTeX file. More stability and better messaging would be beneficial.
Minor Bugs
- Disable external links during exhibit editing mode otherwise they make the embedded iframe look funky
- If you color code the timeline by author, it uses white for "mixed" (that is, papers authored by more than one person). That color doesn't show up very well against the light gray background.
- Citeline throws parsing errors on BibTeX files uploaded through Zotz when encountering an empty citation.
Critical Enhancements
- Need to add support for MIT Certificates to authenticate MIT users

More interoperability with EndNote's BibTeX export
When EndNote exports to a BibTeX file, it maintains any carriage returns (between different keywords, for example), as such:
- keywords = {Baseball
- World Series
- Boston Red Sox},
We'd like to have these imported into Citeline as three separate keywords. But Citeline ignores the carriage returns and imports a keyword of "Baseball World Series Boston Red Sox." Citeline currently needs different keywords separated by commas, so the line would have to read "keywords = {Baseball, World Series, Boston Red Sox},". So, basically, making it parse different keywords and other fields (notes, perhaps) on a carriage return in addition to a comma would be ideal.
Shorter Timeline Titles
For a sensible usage of the timeline feature the titles need to be shortened (e.g. like it is done in zotero). Some long titles are displayed in two lines but they clutter the display as they override other entries because there is not enough vertical space. But this is only valid for some of the titles and they are still too long anyway. In this form timeline is not usable. ( I tried it with the zotero field "short title" but this field is not imported by citeline). [Suggested by Peter Baumgartner]
Citation Styles
We had discussed the idea that having optional citation styles available for alternately-formatted display would likely be very popular for our authors. I recall from the conversation about this that it should be easy to have modified templates to support this. In retrospect, what we think would be better would be to separate the exhibit ‘look-and-feel’ from the ‘data display format’. That is, could we keep the various templates as ‘skins’ but have another option for choosing a citation style? If so, Mat has recommended the following as most-popular options (BTW – most of these are supported in Zotero): AMA|Chicago|IEEE|MLA|NLM|APA|Vancouver
More Visibility for the Export Options in Exhibit
The export options accessed by a mouse hover/pop-up scissors icon is a little hidden. I understand that disabling this might be difficult and we want this option available for end-users of published exhibits, however, would it be possible to have this functionality more prominent to exhibit builders (i.e., another button for ‘Export data’ that would display the various options)?
"What is this?" buttons
Some [?, Need Help, or ‘What’s this?’] buttons that would access a quick description might be nice for the various functional components of the interface.
RSS
Would be cool if citeline offered RSS feeds alongside the exhibit so that people could subscribe to that and be notified of additions to the exhibit. (one crude way to implement this is to dump all the exhibit contents in one big RSS file and let the RSS client figure out the diff)
My Exhibits page
It would be nice if the exhibits in the My Exhibits list sorted by something logical, maybe either by creation date, or last modified date. We don't need a drop-down list of choices or anything, just one method by which they're always sorted.
Adding to (and removing from?) an exhibit
It would be quite useful if you could add references to an exhibit that has already been created, without having to go through Zotero to do it. It could also be useful to have the option of removing references from an exhibit. This could especially come into play if somebody adds references to an exhibit and then realizes they don't want them all there. For example, say they spend a long time working on the layout of an exhibit of their publications and then realize they imported a set that they thought was only their publications, but there are actually a couple of references which are not theirs. Right now, the only way out of that is to re-import and make it all again.
Displaying citation data as appropriate for Publication Type
It would be nice if the default information displayed in the citation conformed to most desired information according to the Publication Type. That is, there are suggested 'mandatory' fields for publication types that we don't display by default (e.g., Publisher for 'Book', School for 'Theses', etc.).
Problems with UTF8 encoding and diacritics display
Diacritics not displaying correctly in facet listings and citation displays. 'Malformed' character display not consistent between facet and citation displays with the later often showing truncation (e.g., facet display=Ivanovi\\'c; citation display=Ivanovi).
Add pointer on FAQ to BibTeX tutorial
Authors unfamiliar with BibTeX format and who don't use a standard bibliographic management tool (Zotero, RefWorks, EndNote) could benefit from some documentation on how to convert their citations to BibTeX (Wikipedia entry?).
Browser 'Back' button usage does not return users to previous state
Allow authors to set [linked file] as anchor to Title
Support for descriptive information about publication
Allow authors to add descriptive info (e.g., submitted for publication) for citations.
Expose BibTeX through UnAPI or embed COinS tags
Allow Zotero users viewing published Exhibits to easily import items to their Zotero collections. Could COinS also be used to generate an OpenURL link from the citation to licensed and open resources for the authored work that aren't linked locally in the Exhibit?
Add support for multiple comments in JSON created
BibTeX from Zotero can include multiple comments. Citeline only outputs a single comment in the JSON.
Exposing known problems
Might be good to have release notes so that known problems and bugs could be better exposed and new features noted.
